Melissa Malarkey is a dedicated educator with over 15 years of experience helping students from diverse academic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds thrive. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University at Buffalo and completed graduate coursework in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Melissa is a North Carolina-licensed educator with extensive expertise in English language development, individualized instruction, and supporting multilingual learners.
Melissa currently serves as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, where she partners with middle and high school teachers to support students in English Language Arts, Biology, History, and other core subjects. She specializes in making rigorous academic content accessible through differentiated instruction, language scaffolds, and evidence-based teaching practices. She also administers state and district assessments, including ACCESS for ELLs, End-of-Course (EOC), and benchmark assessments.
Before returning to North Carolina, Melissa held several leadership positions with The Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference in New York. In these roles, she coordinated diagnostic services and collaborated with families, educators, mental health professionals, and child advocacy teams to ensure students received comprehensive support. Her experiences reinforced her commitment to educating the whole child and building strong partnerships with families.
Throughout her career, Melissa has served as an ESL teacher, classroom teacher, tutor, preschool educator, substitute teacher, and family advocate. Her diverse background enables her to connect with students of all ages and abilities while creating engaging, supportive learning environments where every child feels valued and capable of success.
At Accelerate Academy, Melissa provides individualized and small-group instruction in reading comprehension and math. She is passionate about meeting students where they are, celebrating their strengths, and equipping them with the confidence and skills needed to become successful, independent learners.
Melissa believes every child has unique gifts and unlimited potential. Through compassionate, personalized instruction, she strives to help students grow academically, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
